About the PENT FBA Compass

The PENT FBA Compass: A School-Based Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) Guidance Tool was developed to provide guidance, best practice information, and recommendations for conducting school-based Functional Behavior Assessments. The goal of the Compass is to increase practitioners' awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the FBA process by offering structured support for each major component of a school-based FBA.

True to its name, the Compass is intended to provide direction throughout the FBA process while allowing practitioners to apply their professional expertise, foundational training, and professional judgment based on the unique needs of each student and educational setting.

The PENT FBA Compass is intended to supplement, not replace, foundational training, professional expertise, and professional judgment in conducting school-based Functional Behavior Assessments.

How to Use the PENT FBA Compass

The PENT FBA Compass is designed to be flexible and may be used in a variety of ways by individual practitioners, school teams, school districts, and educational agencies. Practitioners may use the Compass as:

  • A reference tool to guide the development of school-based Functional Behavior Assessments.
  • A training resource to strengthen practitioners' knowledge and understanding of the school-based FBA process.
  • A customizable template by replacing the sample descriptions and definitions with student-specific assessment information.

The Compass includes guidance for each major component of the FBA, along with examples, non-examples (where appropriate), and links to additional resources for further learning. Practitioners are encouraged to adapt the document, as appropriate, to align with local procedures while maintaining the integrity of the FBA process.
